Simon Phin - Be Yourself (everyone else is taken)

As we live in an age of attempting to be everything to everyone it might be a good idea to take stock of our view of oneself.

The Australian singer, Melinda Schneider, some time ago wrote and sang ‘Be Yourself’, a beautiful song capturing the words of Oscar Wilde some 120 years earlier. A simple phrase yet never more important today than it was in a pre-electronic age.

The need to be oneself releases us from feeling to be anything, or anyone, other than who we are. And, often, that person we are is just fine to those whom we work with, live, love and share this short life we have.

Today it is challenging for many of us. We’re withheld from being from those we love, or those we work with, due to Covid-19. We’re unable to, in many cases, to be ourselves. We’re living a life we choose not to live.

So, how do we understand this meaning that we search for our own lives?

I’m a fan of understanding how scientific research and peer-reviewed papers, can provide us with some answers that we seek.

Frank Martela, Ph.D., is an academic researcher specializing in both the Psychology and Philosophy of well-being and meaning in life. He is currently based at Aalto University in Finland. He is the author of ‘A Wonderful Life: Insights on Finding a Meaningful Existence’ (Harper Design 2020) and published a great article in Scientific American (link below).

There is no point going through life attempting to be anyone else than your authentic true self.

Introverts are exhausted by trying to be someone else, an extroverted divisional lead, in the workplace and, vice versa, extroverts need to be around others to gain energy. We need, now when we are outside our comfort zone, to do some work on ourselves.

Being oneself may not make you millions, or give you the chance to be the top of the executive team, but it will give you the best chance yet to live a long, happy and fulfilling life.
